Siham and Her Twins Die on the Way: An Urgent Appeal to Save Mothers in Jebel Marra sudan

Urgent Statement

With profound sadness and sorrow, we mourn Siham Musa Abdelrahman, who died along with her unborn twins during an arduous journey in search of medical care after experiencing complications during childbirth in Talwa village, in the Suni area of Jebel Marra.

According to information from the area, residents carried Siham on a bed on their shoulders over a long distance from a remote mountainous location in an attempt to reach a facility where medical care was available. After arriving in Suni, where the necessary medical intervention could not be provided, her family continued the journey toward Deribat. Tragically, she died on the way, along with her unborn twins.

The death of a woman who had to be carried for hours on people’s shoulders in search of medical assistance highlights the severity of the healthcare crisis facing communities in remote areas of Jebel Marra. The lack of adequately equipped health facilities, emergency services, and maternal healthcare continues to endanger the lives of women, particularly during pregnancy and childbirth.

We therefore issue an urgent humanitarian appeal to health and humanitarian organizations, relevant authorities, and all responsible actors to urgently provide sustainable healthcare services in Suni and the surrounding villages. This should include establishing and equipping a health center capable of handling maternal, obstetric, and emergency cases; providing a qualified obstetrician and gynecologist; and ensuring access to surgical equipment, essential medical supplies and medicines, ambulance services, and an effective medical referral system.

May Siham Musa Abdelrahman and her unborn twins rest in peace, and may her family and loved ones find strength and comfort during this painful time.
