Why More Women in STEAM Are Needed

The Future Needs Your Curiosity: Why Young Women Belong in STEAM

By Hawraa Ghandour | Women in STEM Network

To every young woman who has ever looked at a science experiment, a computer screen, a building, or a painting and thought, “I wonder how that works”: that question could be the beginning of your future.

STEAM brings together science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. These fields help us understand problems and imagine solutions. A young woman who studies STEAM might design a tool that helps children learn, develop cleaner ways to produce energy, make public spaces more accessible, or use art and technology to tell stories that deserve to be heard.

Yet many girls begin to doubt themselves long before they discover what they can do. They may hear that mathematics is too difficult, that engineering is “for boys,” or that a creative person must choose between art and science. None of these messages defines your ability. You are allowed to be curious about more than one thing. You are allowed to learn slowly, ask questions, make mistakes, and try again.

As an educator, I have seen how much can change when a girl is given encouragement and room to explore. The student who stays quiet during her first lesson may become the one who asks the question everyone else was afraid to ask. Confidence often grows through doing: building a small project, testing an idea, finding out why it failed, and improving it.

You do not need to have your entire career planned today. Start with something you care about. If you care about health, explore biology or design. If you care about your community, look at environmental science or engineering. If you love stories, discover how art, data, and technology can bring them to life. Follow a question, then see where it leads.

Families, teachers, and communities have a responsibility too. We can give girls access to learning, introduce them to women working in STEAM, listen seriously to their ideas, and celebrate their effort as well as their achievements. A young woman should never have to prove that she belongs before she is given the chance to learn.

To the next generation of young women: your questions are valuable. Your perspective matters. There is space for you in every laboratory, classroom, design studio, and workshop. Take the first step, and keep going. The future will be stronger with your ideas in it.
